Kennedy - EP

Kennedy - EP

In name only, Kennedy seem to have been around the local music scene for years. Maybe they've played gigs, but they've been off the bh one radar until this year. Earlier this year they put out this three-track ep which is due to be followed up shortly. Kennedy have been pushing the gigs, the promotion, and seem to have decided to give it a real go this year. This is all well and good, and quite refreshing, but of far more importance is the music. Is it any good?

Live, Kennedy have been impressive. At times their brand of indie-rock leans towards a raw, heavy basic rock sound served up locally by Clams. If we stick to local comparisons there can be moments of a more intricate, and experimental style – Ten To Never. Whilst on the opener, 'Chemicals', the sound is nearer the indie-stomp of The Other Half. Kennedy do have their own sound and style though, and the ability to write songs with that all important hook. 'Chemicals' is a four minute pounding, a decent song, saved from mediocrity by another Kennedy trademark – quality vocals and a superb use of harmonies.

'Conversation Killer' raises the bar. A heavier, grungier guitar sound and as with the opener the vocals are shared between Sam Jones and Darren Lovell. These two voices work superbly together with the former sounding more melodic and slightly softer, with Darren's far heavier, gruffer tones adding extra weight when the chorus kicks in (in this case it's the highlight of the song). It's the band's ability to have memorable moments throughout all of their songs which highlights the quality of their songwriting. Okay, at times (as with this song) it's a little uninspiring, but there are constant moments of brilliance which show real promise. And overall it's a cool sound; heavy and dirty, yet melodic and (at times) groovy.

'It's Over' continues with the dirty guitar sound, again to beef up the chorus after the gentle acoustic opening. Once again it's the hook-heavy chorus which saves the song. Other than that it's okay, it rolls along with a decent groove (better live than on record); but this is another cool funky chunk of rock. This three-track ep is a fair reflection of Kennedy's sound, but as with most quality bands, live is where it's at. These guys are on a roll, go check 'em out...
